Description

1903 Springfield Armory 1903 Mark I rifle. Serial number dates it to roughly halfway through 1919. This is a "Mark I" pattern rifle, which means the rifle has the required "low wood" stock cut and ejection port milled into the receiver for use with the Pedersen Device. This rifle shows all the expected features for a relatively early 1903, including early style screw adjust rear sight. Later in life this rifle was overhauled at Raritan Arsenal, as can be seen from a "RA-P" stock cartouche on the "scant" style stock fitted to refitted guns. Condition is overall very nice. Finish on all metal parts is the characteristically thick and slightly crude protective coating expected from a Raritan Arsenal gun, but the coating has done its work and all metal parts are exceptionally clean and free from rust. There are a few spots of wear on the contact points of the safety and bolt head. Wood is good, with a fair number of dents and dings one would expect from a well-used rifle but no abrasions, cracks, or bald spots in the varnish. Mechanical functions are excellent, with a nice tight lockup and smooth bolt. Sights are undamaged. An original sling is included in good condition; the leather presents in well broken-in condition but is totally intact. Brass fittings on the sling have tarnished into a green patina.
